Providing dignity, care, and creative resilience for women in Plymouth

Set up in late 2019, The 40 Project provides Sanitary Kits for around eighty vulnerable women every month in Plymouth. These women are often sofa surfing, in hostels, or sleeping and working on the streets. Each month, we also provide a Top Up of fourteen essential items, ensuring ongoing support beyond the initial kit.

But we go beyond essentials—each kit includes small luxuries like skincare and makeup, because feeling cared for is just as important as being equipped with the basics.

The project is deeply personal—Charlie donates 10% of everything she earns as a freelancer to The 40 Project, ensuring its stability and growth. With support from Changing Futures financing the next year of kits, we’re now expanding to explore creative activities that build resilience, giving women a space to express themselves, connect, and heal.

It matters.

For many women, access to sanitary products isn’t guaranteed. Financial hardship, housing insecurity, or personal struggles can make even the most basic items out of reach. The 40 Project exists to ensure that the most vulnerable woman in Plymouth don't have to choose between dignity and daily survival.

These kits don’t just offer hygiene essentials—they offer a moment of comfort, a reminder that someone cares, and an opportunity for women to feel seen, valued, and supported.
